SIGN REPAIRS

A sign with two dark letters says something about a business that no owner intends. Customers read neglect into it long before they read the name. M Graphics & Signs Inc provides sign repairs in Salt Lake City, UT for signage we built and, just as often, for signage somebody else did. We diagnose on site, quote the repair before ordering anything, and carry common components on the truck so many faults are fixed on the first visit.

A BROKEN SIGN COSTS MORE THAN THE FIX.

Every evening a lighted sign stays dark, a share of passing traffic assumes you are closed. Every month a cracked face sits unrepaired, water works further into the cabinet and turns a simple job into a rebuild. Repairs are one of the few maintenance items where acting early genuinely reduces what the work ends up involving.

Our crews carry drivers, modules, fasteners, and sealant as standard, so a diagnostic visit often turns into a completed repair. When a part has to be ordered, you get the timeline before we leave.

  • Service on any brand of sign

Smoother Daily Operation

A door sized and hung correctly opens and closes without sticking, dragging, or requiring a shoulder to shut. We confirm dimensions and swing direction before ordering so the finished door operates the way it should from day one.

SIGN REPAIRS

MOST FAILURES ARE SMALLER THAN THEY LOOK.

A whole sign going dark usually means one driver, not a dead cabinet. A section flickering usually means a single module string or a corroded connection. A face that has gone milky is often a lamination failure over sound structure. Owners regularly assume replacement is the only option and discover the actual repair is a fraction of the work, which is why the diagnosis matters as much as the fix.

WHAT UTAH WEATHER DOES TO SIGNAGE.

Freeze and thaw cycles open sealed joints, letting meltwater into cabinets where it corrodes connections and shorts drivers. Summer heat degrades gaskets and cooks power supplies mounted without ventilation. Wind loosens fasteners over years of flexing, and the altitude's ultraviolet exposure chalks paint and clouds acrylic. Almost every fault we attend traces back to one of those four causes, which makes them predictable and preventable.

NOTHING INSIDE A SIGN CABINET IS NEW TO US.

We have been opening other companies' cabinets since 1999, which means very little surprises us. Discontinued lamp systems, undersized transformers, faces glued shut, anchors set into stucco with nothing behind it: all of it has come through. That accumulated familiarity is why we can usually tell you over the phone what is likely wrong and what it will take to put right. What is your sign doing?

WHAT A PROPER REPAIR RESTORES

AN OPEN LOOK AFTER DARK

Relighting a dead sign immediately changes what passing traffic assumes about your hours. The frontage stops signaling closed at exactly the time of day evening trade decides where to stop.

YEARS ADDED, NOT MONTHS

Sealing the entry point rather than just replacing the failed part stops the same fault repeating next winter. A repair done properly buys the structure another long stretch of service.

A FRACTION OF A REBUILD

Most faults live in components rather than in structure. Replacing a driver, a face, or a section of lettering restores the sign without paying again for the cabinet and the permit.

NO PERMIT REQUIRED

Repairing existing signage in place generally falls outside new sign permitting, so the work can be scheduled immediately rather than waiting on a municipal review cycle to run its course.

SAFER ABOVE THE SIDEWALK

Loose anchors and corroded brackets on an elevated sign are a liability nobody notices until something moves. Tightening and replacing that hardware removes a genuine risk over a public walkway.

FEWER SURPRISES AHEAD

A technician on a ladder sees the faults that have not failed yet. Catching a degraded seal or a warm driver during one visit prevents an emergency call in February.

WHAT WE FIX

OUR SIGN REPAIR WORK.

Signs fail in a fairly predictable set of ways, and each has a standard remedy. These are the repairs our service crews carry out most often for businesses across the Salt Lake valley each week.

BACK TO LIGHT

LED and Lighting Repairs

Dead sections, dim output, and flicker usually trace to failed modules or a degraded string. Faulty runs are replaced and the remaining lighting is checked for even output so the repair does not show.

THE POWER SIDE

Power Supply and Transformer Replacement

Drivers and transformers are the most common failure point in any lighted sign. We match the replacement to the load, mount it where heat can escape, and check the incoming circuit before closing the cabinet.

NEW SURFACE

Face and Panel Replacement

Cracked, faded, or yellowed faces are remade in our shop to match the original artwork and slide back into the existing cabinet. Rebranding is handled the same way, without touching the structure or the permit.

HOLDING FAST

Structural and Mounting Repairs

Loose brackets, corroded anchors, leaning posts, and wind-damaged frames get reset into sound structure. Where the original fixing was undersized for the wall, we upgrade it rather than tightening what already failed once.

LOOKING NEW

Repainting and Refinishing

Chalked paint, oxidized aluminum, and dulled trim can be stripped, prepared, and resprayed on site or in the shop. Color is matched to your current brand values rather than to the faded original on the wall.

BEFORE IT BREAKS

Preventive Maintenance Programs

Scheduled visits wash faces, check seals, test electrical draw, and tighten hardware across every sign on a property. Multi-site operators use these to catch faults before a customer notices anything wrong at the door.

THE WORD ON OUR WORK

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY.

Repair calls often start with someone expecting bad news. The reaction we hear most is relief that the sign could be saved rather than replaced, and surprise that a crew turned up when it said it would with the part already on board.

Common Questions

frequently asked
questions.

Repair questions usually start with a symptom and a worry about whether the whole sign has to go. These are the ones we hear most on service calls each season.

  • Why has one section of my lighted sign gone dark?

A single dark area almost always means one LED module string has failed or a connection has corroded, rather than the whole system. Replacing that run and sealing the entry point restores even light across the face again.

  • Can a cracked sign face be replaced without rebuilding the sign?

In nearly every case, yes. Cabinet faces are designed to come out, so a new panel is made to the original dimensions and artwork and slides back in. The structure, lighting, and permit all stand.

  • What causes a sign power supply to fail?

Heat, moisture, and overloading account for most failures. A driver mounted in an unventilated space runs hot, a compromised seal lets meltwater reach it, and a supply sized too close to its limit ages quickly in either condition.

  • How often should a lighted sign be inspected?

An annual check suits most installations, ideally in fall before the weather turns. A technician tests draw, examines seals, checks fasteners, and cleans the faces, which catches the faults that strand businesses in January.

  • Can faded sign lettering be restored?

Usually. Painted surfaces can be stripped, prepared, and resprayed to current brand colors, and faded vinyl lettering is simply reprinted and reapplied. Only badly degraded acrylic that has gone brittle needs replacing rather than refinishing.

  • What causes sign lettering to peel or lift?

Surface preparation is the usual culprit. Adhesive applied over dust, wax, or a chalked painted surface never bonds properly, and temperature swings then work at the weak edge until it releases and curls away from the panel.

  • Is it better to repair or replace an aging sign?

If the structure is sound and the design still fits your brand, repair usually makes sense. Replacement wins when the cabinet is corroded through or the identity has changed. M Graphics & Signs Inc assesses both in Salt Lake City, UT.

  • Can a sign be repaired while the business stays open?

Nearly always. Most repairs happen from a lift outside trading hours or in a corner of the parking lot, with entrances kept clear. M Graphics & Signs Inc has worked around open businesses in Salt Lake City, UT for 27 years.

HOW WE WORK

FROM FIRST CALL TO WORKING SIGN, HERE IS HOW.

STEP 01

Describe The Symptom

Tell us what the sign is doing and when it started. Half the diagnosis happens on that call, and it tells us which parts to load before a technician is dispatched to your property.

STEP 02

Diagnose On Site

A technician opens the sign, tests the circuit, checks modules and drivers under load, and inspects seals and fasteners. The actual fault is confirmed rather than assumed from the symptom alone before anything is replaced.

STEP 03

Quote Before Anything Is Ordered

You get the findings and a written price before parts are bought or work begins. If the sign is beyond economic repair, we say so rather than spending your money on a temporary result.

STEP 04

Fix The Cause, Not Just The Fault

Replacing a failed driver without finding where water reached it guarantees a repeat call. We trace the entry point, reseal it, and correct any ventilation or mounting problem that contributed to the failure.

STEP 05

Restore The Appearance

With the fault cleared, faces are cleaned, trim is checked, and any mismatched panel or lettering is corrected so the repair is invisible. A sign that works but looks patched has only half succeeded.

STEP 06

Set A Checkup Date

Before leaving, we note anything showing early wear and recommend when to look at it again. Many clients convert that note into a scheduled maintenance visit and stop having emergencies after that.
